Im Helen Doolan and I'm walking the 58km distance of the Jurassic Coast Ultra Challenge.

I was looking for a challenge in the new year of 2024.

Walking is one of my 'go to' activities in my own self care. I find being outside in nature the best grounding, with the lowest cost I can find, in a culture determined to speed us up more and more, with little permission to slow down, even if you want to.

Making the time and space to train for such a challenge has been a welcome pace change and has the added bonus of raising money for SCC, a charity and organisation I feel privileged to be involved with.

If you think counsellors just sit around all day talking about feelings, and then go home to watch TV, take a look at us! Seven wild things from Somerset Counselling Centre are taking up the Jurassic Coast Challenge on 18th May. Can you be tender-hearted, tough-minded and also have the legs of strong moorland ponies? We think so! And we thought it would be a blast to walk 25, 42, 58 or 100km along the coast of Dorset in our off time. This isn't a one-off: our hardy walking counsellors, along with partners and friends, have been training for months. There's no telling where we may walk next.

We will be raising money for the Somerset Counselling Centre which provides low and no-cost counselling to people in Somerset, and we do it with a difference. Whilst many community based therapies only offer 6-8 sessions, we can see people for much longer periods of time—sometimes for a year or more. Our fundraising subsidises lower-cost places so people can pay part themselves for traditional long-term therapy without taking on the financial burdens normally associated with it. We aim to help as many people as we can, recognising that some of life's troubles take time to address.
