Story
I was once asked in a work workshop to give an example of a hero to me, and I said my dad and I meant it.
One of the hardest working, intelligent and resilient people in my life, he was still working full time at the age of 74 running his own computer software business.
He was pretty stubborn, but also full of interesting stories from his childhood in Africa, he knew absolutely everything, he could rebuild cars, he designed and painstakingly rebuilt a beautiful house and he was the king of bad jokes.
Sadly last year, we he was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. It was a devastating and fast acting illness - after an initial operation to remove the tumour he suffered significant edema, which caused him to no longer be able to walk unaided, speak properly or do lots of simple every day tasks, which meant he wasn't even able to live out the last few months of his life the way he would have wanted.
Then in the summer, we sadly lost dad, just 6 months after his diagnosis, and it left my family and me distraught.
Brain cancer robbed my dad of the opportunity to enjoy his retirement or see his grandchildren grow up and I want to play my part in helping to find a cure for glioblastomas (the cancer dad had, which is currently incurable) so other families don't have to go through this.
So I will be competing in several endurance challenges, pushing myself out of my comfort zone to raise money for Brain Tumour Research so other families don't have to experience this awful illness.
In September I completed over 50km of swimming and running in the Jersey SwimRun - a tough endurance event combining sea swimming and cliff path running.
On the 24th March dad would have turned 75, so I will be spending the day completing 75 challenges in his honour, I will start with a 24km run in the Hospice half marathon, and then I will follow up with 24 reps of 74 different exercises.
Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer… yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. This is unacceptable!
I am fundraising for Brain Tumour Research as they are the only national charity dedicated to funding long-term, sustainable research in the UK. Please help me fund the fight. Together we will find a cure.
