Story
I have chosen to support a charity that focuses on helping disabled people for my upcoming marathon in London because I believe in creating a more inclusive world where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive in any aspect of life. Disabilities come in many forms, with independence being one of my most valued aspects of life; by raising funds and awareness for this cause, I can hopefully make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals who face these unique challenges every day.
Running this marathon is not only a personal challenge for me, being my first but also an opportunity to give back to society and support the importance of accessibility, independence and empowerment for people with disabilities.
Hopefully, I can additionally inspire individuals with or without disabilities through my training videos/progress videos to gain the confidence to get moving and active and increase their independence in the process.
Over the last year, QEF has worked with over 10,000 disabled adults and children living with physical and learning disabilities or acquired brain injuries, supporting them in gaining new skills and increased independence.
Whether learning everyday life skills, rebuilding a life affected by brain injury or acquiring the skills to drive a specially adapted car, QEF supports disabled people in achieving their potential to be as independent as possible and live enriched and fulfilled lives.
There are 16 million disabled people in the UK.
Every 90 seconds, someone is admitted to the hospital with an acquired brain injury.
In the next 20 years, the rate of first-time strokes in people 45+ is expected to rise by 59%.
