Story

Prior to summer 2019, I had no idea how important King's College Hospital would become to our family. Now I cannot thank them enough for saving our daughter's life.

on 27/7/19 my husband and I received a phone call that no parent should ever have to receive. It was an intensive care consultant from Plymouth explaining that our daughter Olivia was very unwell and we needed to get to the hospital as soon as possible. She had acute liver failure, hepatic encephalopathy and was deteriorating quickly.

Unfortunately, overnight Olivia had become so unwell that the her team had to place her into a medically induced coma to save her life. At this point her only chance of surviving this illness was to be transferred over 220 miles away to King's College Hospital. She left that day with an ICU doctor, ICU nurse and two paramedics.

My husband and I arrived at King's the next day to see Olivia and meet with the medical team caring for her. We had to face meetings and discussions that we never thought we'd ever be doing. Would she need an emergency liver transplant? Would she even survive this illness? These are all things we had to consider. We were truly living through anyone's worst nightmare.

Thankfully, Olivia did survive and she is still with us today. None of this would have been possible without King's College Hospital. The staff truly were superheros during such a dark time in our lives. Walking into King's for the first time was terrifying, but as soon as we met the medical team, we had a sense of relief that Olivia was being treated by such dedicated people. That is something we will never forget.

As a thank you to King's, I am going to be runnning the London Landmarks Half Marathon. It's my way of giving back to the place that worked so tirelessly to ensure Olivia had the best outcome.
