Hannah and Sophie's London Marathon fundraiser for NSPCC

London Marathon 2024 · 21 April 2024 ·
Hannah has worked in education for 15 years and is currently a Headteacher of a York Primary School. She is passionate about nurturing pupils and developing the whole child. This includes pupils' understanding how to keep themselves safe. The NSPCC plays a huge part in supporting school leaders and pupils with safeguarding all children and the initiatives they provide schools with, for example the Speak out. Stay Safe. are vital.
Sophie has worked with children and teenagers for 10 years and is currently a Safeguarding Lead in a secondary school. She has benefited personally and professionally from the support of charities such as the NSPCC. York is an area where there is limited agency support outside of the education system compared to other cities in the UK, therefore it is not possible to access the amount of additional support that young people in our local community need for their physical, emotional and mental well-being. The work that agencies such as the NSPCC can do alongside education professionals is invaluable but we know that the funds are not there to keep these going.
We have been running for York Postal Harriers since 2018 and with the support of our friends, family, club mates and Percy Pigs, we just might make it round the 26.2miles!
The NSPCC has been supporting children for over 130 years. They have three impact goals:
- Everyone plays their part to prevent child abuse.
- Every child is safe online.
- Children feel safe, listened to and supported.
The statistics show how vital the NSPCC is for all children:
- In the average primary school class, at least 2 children have suffered abuse or neglect.
- On average, 2 children a minute contact Childline for help. And it costs £4 to answer their call.
- Last year, the NSPCC helpline responded to more than 59,000 contacts.
- Thanks to the NSPCC PANTS resource, more than 1.4 million Parents and Carers had a conversation with their child about keeping their bodies safe.
- Last year, The Speak Out. Stay Safe. programme reached over 1.2 million children.
- Last year, the NSPCC provided almost 200,000 counselling sessions through Childline, their 24-hour 365-days-a-year service. Those sessions were delivered by almost 1,100 volunteers.
In order for these goals to be reached and for the above support to continue, the NSPCC needs the financial support from events such as the London Marathon. Children need the NSPCC and the NSPCC need us to fundraise to help stop child abuse and neglect.
By raising £2,200, we could pay for up to 550 children to get the help and support they need from the Childline counsellors. Raise £3,000, and we can help 750 children.
