10,000 Steps a Day in July for UK Sepsis Trust
The 10,000 Steps a Day in July challenge is a great way in which you can improve your fitness and also raise vital funds and awareness for The UK Sepsis Trust.

Story

Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection.

Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.

As many of you know, in January 2023 I was urgently admitted to hospital with severe pain in my left side. I was diagnosed with Urosepsis due to an infection in a duplex Kidney - which I was completely unaware of. I went into emergency surgery which ended in a nephrostomy being placed for 6 weeks, before having further surgery to have the duplex kidney removed at the end of February 2023.

When I was I was admitted to hospital, I went from being a fully capable 35 year old to being so frail I couldn't even walk to the ward bathroom opposite my bed unaided. I needed assistance to wash myself, brush my hair, and to even sit myself up in bed. I lost just over one and a half stone during my 9 day long admission. I was so drained I didn't have the energy to speak. It terrifies me how unwell I got so fast. I am lucky to live 15 minutes from the hospital, and extremely lucky that I reacted quickly when I felt something wasn't right. I wouldn't be here had I not.

I am doing this to fundraise and help spread awareness of Sepsis. It’s five months on and I am still suffering the side effects of Sepsis (post sepsis syndrome). I have hair loss, insomnia, nightmares, and anxiety over the Sepsis returning. But I am still here and I’m so grateful for that.

Help me raise some money for this incredible cause!
