Story

Weekend of running - First charity fundraising event of the year

This year the London Vitality 10,000 event is taking place on Sunday 24th of September, where more than 16 000 runners will be pounding the streets of Westminster, starting on the Mall and finishing in front of Buckingham Palace. The runners will endeavour to emulate the feat of unknown club runner Ellis Cross who beat Mo Farah in an epic race last year, or just run at a leisurely pace and have a good time!

Amongst all these people will be a group of dedicated teachers from WUS who have trained hard during the summer for this occasion, some being experienced runners whilst others decided to take on a challenge to raise their levels of fitness, or just to participate in a fun, fulfilling event.

In addition, the WUS team have decided to use this race to kickstart the school’s charity fundraising year, during which we will be supporting many worthwhile causes, both in a financial and practical way. For this event, we will be fundraising for the Cardinal Hume Centre, a local charity who work tirelessly to tackle the issue of homelessness and poverty in our community, and who strive to secure a brighter future for those less fortunate than us.

The team of teachers taking part in the London Vitality 10,000 is made up of the following hardy souls:

Emmanuelle Banfield (Latin), Leonie Chacksfield (English), Gwenaël Gougay (French), Alice Hartley (Art), Paul Isaac (Science), Kate Jefferson (Master), Danielle Jones (English / SEND), Edward Matthews (Maths), Rosie Smith (English), Nick Starbrook (Games), Samuel Thébaud (French), Rebecca Wrigley (Maths), Michael Woodside (Deputy Master)

We would like the whole WUS community to be or feel or as much involved as possible. You can:

- Donate generously

- Come and support us on the day (see how many teachers you can spot!)

OR… TAKE PART!...

…Well, almost, since the 10k race on the Sunday is only open to runners aged 16 or above. However, as it is “a weekend of running” that aims to be as inclusive as possible, the event kickstarts on the Saturday with the Westminster Mile where boys and girls can take part in their own race, either by themselves, or with family and friends (there are different starting waves to choose from - see https://www.vitalitywestminstermile.co.uk).

If you decide to run the Saturday event, please drop me an email. I would then create a pupils’ list alongside the teachers’ one, which would broaden our scope to attract as many donations as possible for a very good cause. I have no doubt you would love the event, and who knows, this may even kickstart a running career!

Happy running!
