Story
300 miles over 22 days in aid of Sue Ryder
This August, we, Greta and Abi, will be tackling 300 miles (just under 500km) of a pilgrimage dating back to the 10th century. The Camino de Santiago is one of the oldest pilgrimages, with sea and land routes leading to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. We will be walking 300 miles of the northern route in a “palgrimage” which could make or break 25 years of friendship.
Like Laurie Lee himself, these two Cotswolds girls will walk out one midsummer morning (to board a RyanAir flight to Biarritz) then arrive in Spain to start a 22-day hike along its beautiful, rugged coast.
All for a good cause...
As if taking three weeks of holiday to address our millennial angst wasn’t enough, we are also hoping to raise some money for a great cause on the anniversary of Greta’s Mum’s death.
The 4th August 2023 will mark five years since Yolanda died from rare neurological disease, Multiple System Atrophy (MSA). We know that Yolanda is missed terribly. She is fondly remembered by friends and family and is always in our hearts.
To celebrate her memory we are asking those who would like to, to sponsor us on this occasion, in aid of the charity Sue Ryder.
This charity is particularly close to Greta’s heart as during her Mum’s illness they provided some home visits and complementary care through Leckhampton Court Hospice. Sue Ryder charity enables people to do as Yolanda wished, to spend their remaining days in the comfort of their own home surrounded by their loved ones.
After her Mum’s death, Greta also received free bereavement counselling through Sue Ryder which helped her get back on her feet after a huge loss.
We love all that Sue Ryder does, in its hospices, in communities and in the wider world, to encourage people to be open about death and dying and give people dignity in the toughest times.
So, please think about sponsoring us! £21 could pay for one hour of expert care, helping people to live the best life they possibly can, and £145 could pay for a Sue Ryder nurse for a day.
Below we outline some fantastic things which Sue Ryder achieved in 2021-22, please do take a read.
You may be wondering, how have two exceptionally successful career gals with full social calendars had time to train?
Well as the saying goes, “if you want something done, give it to a busy woman.” Since the beginning of the year, weekend London walks have been a staple in our diaries as well as: weight training – for carrying those packs, yoga – for muscle flexibility, cardio – to work our hearts and, copious amounts of wine – to help our sanity.
We are excited for the challenge, for the weather, for the spiritual ‘palgrimage’ and the chance to take a moment out of our very 21st century London lives and get medieval!
Love,
Greta & Abi xx
