Story
Our Grandad Gig, spent over 50 years of his life raising money for QEF, and supporting the incredible work they do. What he achieved in his lifetime benefitted hundreds of families facing challenging futures. Will and Ed are running the London marathon to provide a small continuation of that support in his honour.
Having been to the Rehabilitation Centre in Leatherhead, and spoken to a number of the patients that QEF have supported, their work and its outcomes are beyond inspiring. The people they support are just like every one of us, but through trauma’s in everyday life, have had to rely very heavily on their support. The level and breadth of support they offer is amazing.
This will be Will's first marathon and having only just got into running in the last year, it will be a real challenge. However, Will wanted to honour the legacy of Gig and continue to support this amazing charity. As part of their training Will and Ed did the Polarnight Half Marathon in Tromso, Norway, in - 11°C this January!
Over the last year QEF has worked with over 10,000 disabled adults and children living with physical and learning disabilities or acquired brain injuries, supporting them in gaining new skills and increased independence.
Whether its learning everyday life skills, rebuilding a life affected by brain injury or acquiring the skills to drive a specially adapted car, QEF supports disabled people to achieve their potential, so they can be as independent as possible and live enriched and fulfilled lives.
There are 16m disabled people in the UK.
Every 90 seconds someone is admitted into hospital with an acquired brain injury.
In the next 20 years, the rate of first-time strokes in people 45+ is expected to rise by 59%.
