Story
The bells of St Swithun’s, Great Chishill, Cambridgeshire, have rung out from the highest the village in the county and surrounding countryside for hundreds of years. The four oldest bells were cast in 1686, the fifth in 1841 and the latest, sixth bell, in 2022. We have recently completed a huge restoration project, raising over £100k to retune and rehang the bells, replace all fixtures and fittings and add a sixth bell. We are immensely thankful to be amongst such a generous and supportive community.
Our beautifully working bells have attracted a surge of fresh interest in the art of bellringing and we now have a large band of ringers from Chishill and the surrounding villages, keen to keep the tradition of ringing for services, weddings and funerals thriving. Further developments are required to accommodate this growing group by maximising the available space and adding a small extension to the ringing floor.
