Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am taking on Scotland Coast to Coast in September.
This is a 100 mile, 3000 metre elevation gain run, cycle and kayak starting in Nairn and finishing in Fort William.
I have, quite literally, never done anything like this before.
This isn't a normal fundraiser. I need 2 things - money, and I need people to register as donors for DKMS.
A bit of context:
Several years ago, I registered as a potential stem cell donor with DKMS. Most likely, you don't hear anything and that's that. However, after being on the list a while, I received a call to say I had a match. I won't go on and on about the process, but I will say I got put up in a hotel, spent a few hours in a very fancy private hospital and ate some sandwiches. That really was it.
A couple of years after I donated, I received a letter from my recipient. It was a guy, similar age to me and with a couple of kids. Just prior to matching with me he had stopped his chemo and was agonising over how to say goodbye to his children. The letter I received told me he was completely cancer free and living a perfectly normal life. He was literally told there was nothing more could be done for his cancer unless he found a match. Pretty amazing what can be achieved from sitting around eating a few sandwiches. Stories like this can only happen with 2 things:
Money & Donors.
So please take the time to register on the DKMS (www.dkms.org.uk) It takes minutes to register, you'll get a swab sent out. You take the swab, send it back and that's it. Chances are you'll never be matched. If you are, it's to save someone's life. It's really that simple.
DKMS are a non profit organisation who flew me to London, put me up in a hotel and paid all my expenses during my donation. This needs money to be possible. It simply can't happen without these 2 things.
So please, take 5 minutes to register and if possible, please give any monetary donation you can.
Much Love,
Graeme
