Story

Anyone that knows me well will know I am not a natural-born runner. I actually hate it and I am absolutely cacking it already.

However, I wanted to support a charity very close to my family’s hearts by running the Oxford half marathon in October for SSNAP (Supporting Sick Newborns and their Parents).

In September 2019, my nephew James needed to be born prematurely, 3 months early in fact. SSNAP supported my brother and sister-in-law during James’ first 6 months living in hospital. They understood that their lives had been turned upside down and were there for practical and emotional support when all the plans had gone out the window and the rug pulled beneath their feet. They understood the trauma and showed them what true hope looks like. We are beyond thankful that James is here with us and thriving, but we know for some families that doesn’t happen. I am running for our precious Jimmy James, to say thank you to SSNAP for their love and light, but I’m also running for all the families who carry their babies home in their hearts, and not in their arms. SSNAP are always there, especially during the darkest of times.

I would be really grateful, no matter how few, if you could spare some pennies to sponsor getting my carcass over that finish line. SSNAP deserve every penny, so I’m going to do my very (amateur) best for them. Thank you ❤️ (and pray for me lol) Grace x

MORE ABOUT SSNAP:

When newborn babies need specialist, often lifesaving, medical care at birth it can be a traumatic and difficult time for parents and families.

In 2024, SSNAP will be celebrating 42 years of supporting parents and their premature sick babies at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford - providing both emotional and practical support, 365 days a year, being a life-line at a time when parents need us most.

We fund essential medical life-saving equipment, research, and support the amazing NHS staff on the neonatal unit with training and study days, to enable them to continue to provide the very best of care.

Please join our amazing 'SSNAP Superhero Oxford Half Marathon team,' and help us in our appeal to raise £90,000 for SSNAP.

By running for SSNAP, you will be joining not only the best team in town, but will be helping make a difference for over 1000 babies and their families that we support each year, from across Oxfordshire and the UK.

In the UK, 1 in 10 babies need specialist care at birth. SSNAP supports sick & premature babies and their families in the Newborn Care Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital. Imagine your newborn baby needing specialist care at birth. Instead of those very special days getting to know your baby as a family, you’re catapulted into an unfamiliar world of incubators, wires, medical tests and interventions. While your baby has specialist treatment, we provide emotional and practical support to help you through the trauma & upheaval. We’re there to help families cope, and provide state-of-the-art medical equipment and nursing expertise that could save babies lives.
