Help Me Give Back to the NHS: 52 Marathons, 250km Swimming, and 2.5 Million Steps in 2025
Hi, I’m Martyn Smith. In 2015, my life changed forever when I suffered two devastating strokes. I was left unable to walk, talk, or even sit up. But thanks to the incredible care I received from the NHS, I’ve made a recovery I never thought possible. Now, ten years later, I want to give back to the organisation that saved my life.
Starting on 1st January 2025, I’ll be taking on my biggest challenge yet: completing 52 marathons (one a week), swimming 250km, and walking 2.5 million steps over the course of the year. My goal is to raise £25,000 for Brighterway, the NHS charity that supports Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare, to enhance patient care and staff well-being.
This challenge is deeply personal. I want to show that recovery is possible, no matter how tough the journey. I’ll be working with Brighterway to ensure every pound raised goes toward making a real difference, whether through improved patient facilities, staff wellness programs, or essential equipment.
The NHS saved me, and now I want to pay it forward. But I can’t do it alone. I’m inviting you to join me—whether by donating, cheering me on, or even participating in one of the monthly walking or swimming events I’ll be organising. Together, we can make a real impact on our NHS community.
Every contribution, no matter the size, will help me reach my goal and support the amazing work of the NHS.
Thank you for your support,
Martyn
