Story
Godfrey encountered extreme poverty when working in Yemen as a young man in the early nineteen-sixties. He has also been aware of the impending climate emergency for many years which led him to stand as an independent Green candidate in the 1997 election.
Therefore Christian Aid's work for the relief of poverty and advocacy for climate justice aligns powerfully with his beliefs. Motivated by his Christian faith he wants to do all he can, and has undertaken to walk 1,000 miles to raise money for Christian Aid.
At the start of this challenge he was able to walk at just under a mile per hour, and was spending up to five hours, most days, walking up and down a 1 mile long uneven track beside his home, clocking up 2-4 miles a day. His pace has slowed, but he remains determined to keep going, and is still managing half to one mile a day.
In memory of his wife of 62 years Rev. Honor Mary, who died in September 2022, and in recognition of the holy writings of the fourteenth century anchoress Julian of Norwich, Godfrey set out to walk (in sections) from his home near Derby to St Julian's Church in Norwich. He completed his pilgrimage in October 2023 and began his 1,000 mile challenge in January 2024.
He loves to have company and a chat, and if anyone has a bit of time to spare, a fellow-walker for an hour would be a great encouragement to him. Alternatively, please come alongside him by donating and helping in his quest to relieve poverty around the world.
