Story
Over the years I’ve been privileged to be able to help raise awareness for many amazing charities that help people dealing with Dementia, Pancreatic-cancer, end of life care (Rotherham Hospice) Bone-cancer, Mental health, premature baby loss and Diabetes to name a few.
We’ve ran varying distances from 10k to half-marathons, swam the distance of the British channel, ran 4km every 4hrs for 2 days, tackled obstacle courses and completed 5km of burpees to help raise money for the people affected.
In 2024 we will aim to raise awareness (and plenty of cash hopefully) for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust in support of GLWD member Sophie Kay and her husband, Liam as their son, Alfie deals with the trials and tribulations of CF on a daily basis.
Sophie has been a long term member of GLWD from the days of training in fields and Liam will always be known as “the gaffer” after managing me at Retford United. Alfie was even born on the same day as my youngest, Ralph so this one is especially close to my heart.
May is CF Awareness month so we have chosen it for the fundraiser event kicking off on the 16th and finishing on the 26th as I attempt to complete 10 days of 10k’s!
I will aim to complete a 10k on consecutive days for 10 days straight. I will also be requesting support runners to help me through the challenge and with the final run starting and finishing at the Haynook on bank holiday Sunday, hopefully we get a great turn out like last years event!
Collection buckets will be doing the rounds, sun shining (hopefully,) drinks flowing and the Big bro, Ryan will be capturing it all on footage for us once again too!
What is Cystic Fibrosis?
CF is a genetic condition which causes sticky mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive system. It affects more than 10,800 people in the UK. One in 25 of us carries the faulty gene that causes it, usually without even knowing.
Cystic fibrosis comes with challenges, affecting our physical health, mental wellbeing and how we choose to live our lives. CF Trust is uniting people towards the ultimate goal of effective treatment for all.
Sophie and Liam have to be alert 24hrs when it comes to infections, cleanliness and anything usually considered “minor” that could be really damaging to little Alfie.
It’s a never-ending battle of worries, stress and anxiety around their little boy that us parents often take for granted.
We are all quick to bemoan our kids for acting up in public or being messy around the house but Liam and Soph have to deal with REAL potentially life-risking dangers on a daily basis when it comes to managing CF.
As I write this, Sophie informs me that they are currently in hospital treating Alfie for an infection which really does drive home just how impactful CF is on their lives.
This May we come together as a GLWD Family to help support them and their chosen charity!
Any and all donations are more than appreciated! So let’s get giving guys!
