Story
Starting on Saturday 3 June I will be cycling the North Coast 500 in Scotland and raising money for the Vintners' Foundation. I plan to complete the ride in 6 days which will cover over 500 miles with a total amount of climbing of almost 34,000ft, nearly 5,000ft more than the height of Mt Everest!
This is by far the hardest, longest and highest cycling challenge I have ever attempted and I am somewhat daunted by the prospect - I'm not getting any younger! Training started in January; as did the diet and, probably the most shocking element for a member of the Vintners' Company to hear, a much reduced consumption of alcohol!
The NC 500 route begins at Inverness Castle and, after initially heading over to the west coast it continues north to the top of Scotland, along the north coast and back down to the finish at Inverness Castle.
The ride will feature spectacular scenery with many steep climbs, including the infamous Bealach na Bà, a winding single track road through the remote mountains of the Applecross peninsula. As far as climbs go, Bealach na Bà is considered to be the Holy Grail, the toughest and wildest climb in Britain.
It has been said that the West Coast of Scotland is one of the most beautiful spots on earth, when the sun shines; and one of the worst when it doesn't. As well as changeable and often unpredictable weather conditions, long days in the saddle and steep climbs, there is also Scotland's infamous 'Wee Beastie' to contend with!
