A Great British Odyssey

Angus Collins is raising money for James' Place Charity

Great British Odyssey · 1 June 2025

Our mission is to stop men dying by suicide and we believe death by suicide is preventable. Yet, in the UK suicide is still the single leading cause of death of men under 50. At James’ Place, we provide proven, professional therapy for men in suicidal crisis to help them find hope for the future.

Story

Embarking on the most formidable challenge of my life, I, Angus Collins, a holder of five world records in ocean rowing, am set to pioneer a solo circumnavigation of mainland Great Britain. This endeavor aims to raise crucial funds for James' Place, a charity dedicated to providing life-saving treatment to men in suicidal crisis.

Despite my achievements across the Indian, Atlantic (twice), and Pacific Oceans, my most profound battles were waged silently against severe mental health issues. These personal struggles, often concealed and faced in isolation, resonate with many. My journey from deep despair to discovering purpose fuels my commitment to support others in similar situations.

This solo row represents more than physical endurance; it symbolizes the resilience required to confront mental health challenges. While awareness of men's mental health has grown, significant gaps persist in effecting substantial change. Through this endeavour, I aim to create a platform that drives measurable advancements in men's mental health support and suicide prevention.

James' Place operates centres in Liverpool, London, and Newcastle, with plans for Bristol and Birmingham. Each intervention costs approximately £1800, and every donation directly funds these life-saving services.

I invite you to follow my journey and join me in forging a path toward improved mental health support for men. Together, we can make a tangible difference.
