Story
On the evening of Monday 22nd July 2024 I was admitted into Worthing Hospital through A & E. I was diagnosed with advanced colorectal cancer and had an emergency operation the following morning which saved my life. I remained in Worthing Hospital for 15 days and will begin chemotherapy shortly.
This diagnosis was a complete shock to me, my family and friends.
That said, the experience has opened my eyes to a lot of things, not least the patience, kindness and dedication of the nursing team at Clapham Ward, Worthing Hospital and the good humour and courage of my fellow patients on the ward, some of whom had been there for several weeks.
I recognise that at 62 I am comparatively lucky. My children are grown up and I have a great network of family and friends who are really supportive. I can't help but think of those less fortunate, children, parents with young families, people with caring responsibilities and those that live alone.
I, together with a number of friends and relatives will participate in a cycling event to raise money for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity which solely financially supports The Royal Marsden, a world-leading cancer centre. The Royal Marsden ensures our nurses, doctors and research teams can provide the very best care and develop life-saving treatments, which are used across the UK and around the world.
From funding state-of-the-art equipment and groundbreaking research, to creating the very best patient environments, the Royal Marsden will never stop looking for ways to improve the lives of people affected by cancer.
The event will comprise a 116 mile cycle ride representing the distance from my house near Worthing to the Royal Marsden Hospital, Chelsea and back again. The ride will take place on normal outdoor bikes or on indoor bikes at home or at a gym at the choice of each participant. It can be completed in one day, one week or even over a month.
Thank you for your generous and valued support.
