Gary's fundraiser for Children's Book Project

Three month cycle tour following the route taken by the author and poet, Laurie Lee
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My late wife, Karen, my raven-haired Spanish-Irish Gypsy from Bolton, who sadly died back in 2012, had been a Reception teacher for most of her teaching career. Karen loved children and loved helping children read. A passionate reader herself, Karen with her superb fellow staff members, must have taught thousands of children over the years.
I myself, from 1989 to 2008 was a Primary School teacher in Wolverhampton, UK.
I can still remember the thrill of being at an Infant's School, East Park in 1989 and seeing the pilot run of a new Reading Scheme, Oxford Reading Tree.
Alex Brychta, the illustrator and Roderick Hunt, the author, would come into the school to work with the children and staff, sharing ideas and helping with delivery. Fabulous times for a teacher, me, new to the Primary sector. Until then I had been a Secondary Science teacher.
The teaching of reading in schools with too many impoverished children was exhilarating, humbling and vital.
The game of 'bonk,' a sort of Paired Reading game where the child reading can tap my hand in order for me to stop reading out loud at the same time the child is doing so, became a daily pleasure. So much fun and so many laughs, reading was fun.
Too many of these children was deprived areas of Wolverhampton, didn't have any books at home.
I remember one Christmas a child in my class was thrilled to receive a jigsaw puzzle as a present! This was her only Christmas present that year and she loved it.
To have the chance now, through donating books directly to The Children's Book Project or by kindly giving a donation to help them with their vital work, well how marvelous is that?!
