I'm running the London Landmarks Half Marathon raising money for Dementia UK in memory of my Dad Geoff.
As many of you are aware I lost my Dad, my hero Geoff to Dementia & Parkinson's in October 2022. I cannot begin to tell you the stresses and pain these illnesses put a family through, slowly watching the person you love deteriorate until they pass away.
I am hoping to raise as much money as possible for this great charity who provides specialist Dementia support to families who are also dealing with the terrible effects of Dementia.
👉 Parkinson’s disease is caused by a decrease in dopamine levels due to the loss of nerve cells in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra
👉 As the disease progresses people are increasingly likely to have a tremor, shaking, slowness of movement and rigidity. Cognitive changes can include forgetfulness, hallucinations and delusions, and difficulty learning new things
👉 About a third of people with Parkinson's will go on to develop dementia, usually in the later stages. This is known as ‘Parkinson’s disease with dementia’ and may also be referred to as Lewy body dementia.
Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Our nurses, called Admiral Nurses, provide life-changing care to families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. They help people with dementia stay independent for longer, and support the people caring for them so they have the strength to cope with the bad days, and the energy to enjoy the good days. They have the time to listen and the knowledge to solve problems, helping families take back control when they are struggling.
