Story
A team of MERCIAN Soldiers is attempting to complete the Potteries ‘Arf marathon on Sunday 29th September 2024. The team will consist of x16 MERCIAN Soldiers mostly from the Stoke-on-Trent area. A stretcher, weighing 80kg, will be carried along the 13.1 mile route around the Potteries.
The Potters 'Arf is a challenging 13.1-mile race held in the city of Stoke-on-Trent, featuring the famous "Heartbreak Hill" section. This iconic event attracts runners from across the country who are drawn to the hilly course and the incredible support from the local community. Participants are rewarded with a unique medal and a thrilling city centre finish that energizes even the weariest legs.
Completing the event is to individually raise awareness and charity funds for very our Mercian Benevolent Fund (which supports both serving and veterans of the MERCIAN Regiment LINK) and the Stoke City Community Trust (We use the power and passion of the Football Clubs assets to make a positive difference to the education, health & wellbeing and life outcomes to those participants who engage in our activities LINK).
Also to expose the grit and professionalism of MERCIAN Soldiers. To set an example and show the public who we are and what we’re capable of. Instil teamwork and leadership internally so that younger members of the team can grow and show their leadership potential.
Most importantly, increase the awareness of the Regiment across MERCIA. We are your local Infantry Regiment with a proud heritage to the local area.
One of our Soldiers LSgt John Baskeyfield is a Victoria Cross winner from Stoke-on-Trent. His actions during Operation Market Garden in WW2 is fondly remembered, not only in the Regiment but also in local area. There is a proud statue erected a few miles from here (Festival Park) in memory of our proud Regimental/local hero.
