We breed and train guide dogs to give blind people freedom and mobility

Story

Almost two million people in the UK are living with sight loss that has a significant impact on their daily lives. Of those, around 180,000 rarely leave their homes alone and lead lonely, isolated lives.

Guide Dogs works for a world where people with sight loss are never left out of life, for a world where being blind or partially sighted is not what defines you. A world with enough support to make the challenges of sight loss no barrier to fulfilling hopes and dreams.

Greater Anglia operates regional railway services in East Anglia and intercity services into London Liverpool Street. Whether it is first time travelling by rail or a regular passenger, we want everyone to feel comfortable and confident when travelling with us. We support national schemes , such as the Assistance Dogs Travel scheme. Staff are taught to recognise them and understand that disabilities may not be visible.

Ely Railway Stations helps with all aspects of a journey, for passengers with sight loss. Whether it may be getting on and off the train( including ramps, sighted guidance, etc.)

Moving between platforms and around the station. Purchasing tickets and Assisting with luggage.

Our customer service staff have been trained in disability equality and are always happy to help if a disability is visible or not.

The Fundraising events held at Ely Station, have always been a success and with the help, support and donations of our customers and fellow train members we are passionate for our next challenge in raising enough money to be able to name a puppy, in memory of our beloved friend and colleague Mr A Denny ( Train Driver from Ipswich) who dedicated 40 plus years to the Railway Industry but sadly passed away whilst on duty at Ely Station.

The ability to get around is vital in order to live a full life yet thousands of people with sight loss never leave home alone. We empower visually impaired people to do that and rely on the support of the public to fund the guide dog service.
