Story
On Monday 6th February, two devastating 7.8 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes struck in Türkiye & Syria.
The damage has been enormous, initial reports estimate that at least 2,300 people have been killed, and numbers are expected to rise significantly. Thousands more have been injured and hundreds of buildings have collapsed.
The situation is exacerbated by extreme winter temperatures and existing vulnerabilities, such as the large number of internally displaced people in the region and health systems on the brink of collapse.
RedR UK is already present in the Middle East and has been delivering training on Structural Detailing and Damage Assessments in Syria, focusing on supporting structural engineers and construction specialists to assess damage to infrastructure, repair damaged buildings and retrofit to build future resilience against earthquakes.
