Story
1 in 1,000 children born in the UK develop liver disease. But advances in diagnosis, drug therapies, molecular genetics, and transplantation mean we can save the lives of children with liver disease, and those requiring intestinal transplantation.
What Split Do
There are only three transplant centres in the UK so children travel long distances for treatment. This can be expensive and disruptive for families. SPLIT helps families who might struggle during this time. SPLIT supports children and young people with liver disease, liver and/or intestinal transplantation and their families through:
✔ Financial support for families and crisis grants.
✔ Information and education for families, professionals, and the public.
✔ Research into the causes of liver disease, intestinal transplantation, and treatments.
Our own Ann Butler (Senior Executive) accessed the service with her Granddaughter Tilly, here's what she had to say;
My 7 yr old granddaughter Tilly was diagnosed with Stage 4 Liver Cancer just before Covid struck. After rounds of chemotherapy to shrink the cancer, the only real cure was a multi-organ transplant. SPLIT was amazing and supported Tilly and the family all the way along what was a very bumpy road. Tilly is now fit and well, and thanks are also due to BCH Staff, the transplant teams and the selfless generosity of the donor family, for which we will be eternally grateful.
