Story

Mountain wonderkid Frankie is back, preparing to break more international records and move more of the world’s mountains. And this time his charity fundraising is his love letter to his much-missed Grandad…

Little Frankie McMillan has captured the nation’s heart (and media’s interest) over the last year – setting new records, raising thousands of pounds for charities, and inspiring other children to get outdoors and do healthy things they love.

At the age of just seven he became the youngest Briton ever to summit the highest point of Mount Olympus, the famous Mountain of the Gods. Then just a few weeks after turning eight he hiked for 15 days to Everest Base Camp – very nearly the top of the world at an ear-popping 5,364 metres (17,598 feet)!

Now Frankie is packing for his next record-breaking fundraiser – travelling to Morocco in his half-term school-holiday to become the youngest person to complete the Three Peaks of the Atlas Mountains – the highest summits of the entire northern region of the African continent.

And it so happens that Frankie will be at a dizzying 4,167 metres (13,671 feet) for the second anniversary of his Grandad’s death from myeloma, a form of blood cancer. He says that being that much closer to Heaven will make it easier for him to blow Grandad a kiss…and what better way to say “I love you” than raising money for the amazing Anthony Nolan Trust?

The Charity has been close to Frankie’s heart right from the day he was born, as life-saving stem cells were harvested for the charity from Frankie’s own umbilical cord just minutes after he arrived in the world.

The Three Peaks are, in ascending order: Ras Quanoukrim (4.083), Timzguida (4.089m) and Toubkal (4.167m). In addition Frankie will climb Toubkal West (4.030m) and Buidoudan (3.680m). For context, Toubkal is nearly five times higher than Scafell Pike, England’s tallest mountain!

Internet searches and Atlas mountain guides tell us Frankie will be the youngest person ever to complete the three peaks, traversing the highest ridge in North Africa.

With ‘safety first’ always in mind, Frankie will climb with his mum Basia, a fully qualified mountain leader and mountain rescue volunteer in the UK, accompanied by a Toubkal specialist guide.

Frankie always sets a fundraising target that means something to him (for example, his Everest Base Camp target was £5,364 – a pound for every metre of height). This time he wants to raise £2,000 – a round thousand for each of the two years his Grandad has been gone. We hope you will help him to help this amazing charity, which saves lives by matching stem cell donors to patients while also funding groundbreaking research into this complex disease.
