In 1994 I lost my father to suicide, he was 59 years of age. In 2005 I lost my sister in law to suicide she was 48. Both under tragic circumstances and clearly it devastated the families impacted and left scars. In between then and now we have witnessed other family members and friends taking their own lives.

In the UK we lose someone to suicide every 80 minutes and it is the highest cause of death in men under the age of 50 and in all adults under 35. Despite this, effective support is hard to find.

The Listening Place (TLP) meets this need by providing free, face-to-face, ongoing support to those who feel suicidal. And they know that their support works, with visitors reporting a highly-significant reduction in how suicidal they feel after 3 and 6 months of support.

To date TLP has supported 14,000 people and aims to support 6,000 this year.

I truly believe that if this service had been in place back then, the outcome may have been different.

In May of 2023 I was privileged to become a Board Trustee at TLP. This is one small way of helping and supporting this amazing charity and the volunteers who give up their time to do such great things.
