when I pledged to raise for funds for bowel cancer uk I had no idea that my friend would contact me and tell me that she had it. Shes had a really tough time of it, and is only just recovering from a bone marrow transplant due to aplastic anaemia. Ive cried a few times. Shes a tough cookie but its that horrible C word again....my most hated word. Please could you pop in a couple of quid to help families like Laura's.
After the loss of my brother in law to cancer, I found myself doing things that I had only dreamed of before. I had just taken up running again, after trying previously, but this time, I was determined that I would make use of my legs and I wouldn't waste my years.
From sky diving, to half marathons, tough mudder and marathons, to my first ultra and now to my biggest challenge, running 135 miles. I'll be running around the beautiful Island of Anglesey with some fairly tight cut offs for me.
What is going to make it harder, is running 105 miles around the lake district, one month prior to this. I am not underestimating either race or my ability but I hope that I can complete both.
So why bowel cancer?
A friend that I met through my love of running, has beaten this cancer and its so wonderful to see her living her life.
I had also followed Dame Deborah James on Instagram for a long time and it really saddened me to see her lose her fight. Its so hard to watch someone lose their independence, but she did it with such grace and finesse, something that the late Jason did too. He didn't complain about losing his legs, or being ill. He made peace with death and he was in so much pain. I almost feel like that's why ultras have become so significant. It's like choosing to test how much you can withstand as a person. The difference being that you have a choice to quit and it's not so hard when your greeted by the views that are on offer here. It's my way of choosing to live a life that brings me challenges as well as joy. I have lost so many people to cancer, that I'm just trying to raise a lil for as many organisations as I can each year. So many of you have already been so generous on many of my past challenges but I hope that my latest might warrant a bob or two.
