We offer expert care, guidance and support to people living with a terminal illness

Story

In just under four weeks, I will be heading to Sweden to start my Artic challenge. On the first night we will stay in a remote basic log cabin that has no power, an open fire and beds. Our aim over the 6 days is to build a snow hole that we will sleep in on the last night. On the remaining nights, we will be sleeping in shelters constructed by natural resources that we will build this will be the survival phase. Temperatures are expected to range from 0 degree to - 30 degrees. I have signed up for this as I have a significant birthday in February and I thought what better way to celebrate than to raise money for a charity very close to my heart.

I am a District Nurse within Portree and North Skye Community Nurse Team. A hugely important area of our work in community nursing is caring for the terminally ill in the patient’s home. We work very closely with Marie Curie Nurses- without those nurses, we would struggle to keep our terminally ill patients at home. The most common time of the day we need those nurses is at night. Once booked in, a Marie Curie Nurse will be in attendance from 10 pm to 7 am. This shift is hugely important as it allows the family to get much-needed rest, they can shut their door knowing their loved one will get 1-1 care. It also allows the community nurses to get a rest overnight as well as they are often on duty the next day, sometimes lone working.

Thank you for reading and if possible, please support me if you can, it is very much appreciated

Much Love Fiona (Peem) xx

Marie Curie provides care and support for people living with any terminal illness across the UK. Our nurses work night and day in peoples homes and our hospices offer specialist care. We also support people emotionally, provide practical information, and match them with trained volunteers.
