Story
The Fendix Stepathon fundraiser
Fendix is 'stepping out' to fundraise for Chestnut Tree House between Monday 20th May and Sunday 23rd June. Over the course of five week, we will add up all our steps. From 60,000 steps each in our first week, we will ramp up to join in with the Children's Hospice Week's 99,000-step challenge in the week commencing 17th June.
Each person in our team will push themselves to walk a total of 399,000 steps over the five weeks of our challenge: the equivalent of walking from Brighton to Birmingham.
As an aggregate, our team of 14 will walk a total of 5,586,000 steps (roughly 3,486 km, the equivalent of walking from Montreal to Mexico City!)
The Children's Hospice Week 99,000-step challenge
Children’s Hospice Week celebrates children’s hospice and palliative care services across the UK, and the seriously ill children and young people they support. Their 99,000 Steps Challenge represents one step for every child living in the UK with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition. Our Stepathon incorporates this stretching challenge in its last week, 17th-23rd June 2024.
Why Chestnut Tree House?
Chestnut Tree House, Fendix's company charity for 2024, is a children’s charity providing hospice care and community support for children and young people with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions.
On a visit to Chestnut Tree House, kids can be astronauts for the day in the multi-sensory room, discover creepy crawlies on a woodland walk, or form their very own pop group in the music room. It is a place where parents can just be parents, and not carers, and where siblings have people to talk to who understand.
There are hundreds of children and young people in your local community who are unlikely to reach adulthood. And even more parents and family members who need care, help and support on their journey, as they don't know how long they will have together.
Your support helps families to spend time together. Precious moments that give a lifetime of memories. Read family stories on the Chestnut Tree House website.
What we can do with your help
Our team target is £1,400: enough to give a child one day of fun, activities, and support at Chestnut Tree House and an overnight stay in their own bedroom, allowing parents to get a full night’s sleep. Examples of what your donations could afford include:
£11 could pay for a selection of arts and crafts materials, allowing families to have fun together and make precious memories.
£23 could pay for a fun hour of activities for a child, including treasure hunts, baking, sensory adventure stories, crazy foam messy play and so much more.
£58 could give a family and their child a couple of hours splashing about in our soothing and accessible hydrotherapy pool, with a nurse to look after their child’s medical needs.
£175 could give a group of teenagers a rare night out to an accessible cinema, comedy club, or bar, accompanied by the hospice Activities Team.
£230 could enable a nurse to support a family following the death of their child, helping them to plan the funeral and to say their final goodbyes.
Our team aggregate itinerary
As a team, we will collectively walk from Montreal (Canada) to Mexico City. At the start of each week, we will ‘stop’ at a special landmark:
Week 1: Montreal city centre (our starting point)
Week 2: Niagara Falls (c. 667 km from Montreal)
Week 3: Cincinnati Reds baseball match (c. 778 km from Niagara Falls)
Week 4: Graceland, Memphis (c. 889 km from Cincinnati)
Week 5: NASA Space Centre, Houston c. (c. 1,001 km from Memphis)
Final day: Xochimilco floating gardens, Mexico City (c. 1,101 km from Houston, and our destination)
