A Year of Volunteering in Japan with The Project Trust
I am fundraising to allow me to be able to volunteer for eight months in Japan from January 2026 with the British Educational Charity Project Trust, ‘a year with no gaps.’
I am currently in my final year of school and due to sit my A-levels in a few months in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, and Geography. I will then be applying to university to study Economics and Mathematics.
I believe that it is really valuable to be able to gain more experience of the world through living in and being immersed in a different country and culture, so I am taking this opportunity before university. I applied for and was fortunate enough to be accepted to spend 8 months volunteering abroad with Project Trust and will be volunteering in Japan with a chance of being placed in Cambodia or China.
Project Trust is a British educational charity with over 50 years of experience providing international volunteering opportunities for young people. Since 1967 over 8,000 Project Trust Volunteers have explored their potential, learnt from another culture, and contributed to an international community. I have been inspired by speaking with many former volunteers and hearing about what they learnt and how they contributed to their host community. Volunteers are chosen based on their enthusiasm, leadership skills, willingness to work collaboratively with others, openness to learning from new cultures, and desire to share and contribute through volunteering. I have been through a rigorous selection process and have been selected to take part.
I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity of a good education and the chance to participate in music, sports, and a wide range of extracurricular activities. I very much hope that I can share my energy, enthusiasm, and passion for learning in maths, economics, science, music, and sports and hopefully nurture this passion in the children I teach, many of whom may not have had these diverse opportunities.
I have been fascinated with Japanese culture from a young age—the language, the people, the food, and the traditions—and I am really looking forward to being able to explore this further. Japan is a captivating country brimming with contrasts that effortlessly blends ancient traditions with cutting-edge innovations. Japan has a fascinating, rich tapestry of culture and lifestyle.
Project Trust has placements in schools right across Japan, in both urban and rural settings. I could be teaching in Tokyo amongst the skyscrapers or the temples of Kyoto or in Toya on Hokkaido. The schools differ from project to project, and I will be teaching English to either kindergarten, primary school, or secondary school. I will also be setting up extracurricular activities in music and sports.
I will be working and living together with another project trust volunteer, and we will live in the heart of the community, very much getting to know life in Japan. I will start to learn Japanese in preparation after my A levels.
I am really looking forward to the challenge of teaching. I teach on a sports program in my school and teach sailing to children and adults, but teaching English in another country with a different language will be a challenging but hopefully a fulfilling experience.
I am so fortunate to have this amazing chance to be able to contribute to my host community and also to learn and grow as an individual by immersion within another culture and community.
