Story
Hey- thanks for visiting.
I am raising money for the East of England Ambulance service because often overlooked are the amazing, talented staff and life-saving work the paramedics, call handlers do on a daily basis! They are there 24/7 to help and deserve recognition, praise and funding to continue their outstanding work!
If you don’t know me and my story here it is:
On September 19th 2023 I was climbing (bouldering) where I fell around 20ft and broke my elbow. I didn’t realise I broke my elbow (because I’m badass) and carried on climbing. Obviously, due to my elbow injury I was unable to complete the climb and fell from the top off the last hold ( I know- shocking I managed to even get that far up with a broken elbow- I told you- I’m badass!). Anywho…on that final hold I fell completely onto my ankle and for lack of a better word- buggered it!
I had multiple breaks and dislocations to my right ankle and had emergency surgery on the 20th September where multiple pins and screws were placed in the ankle.
Unfortunately- due to significance of my injury I have been told it’s a limb/life changing injury with nearly 100% chance of Avascular Necrosis and Osteoarthritis with around 60% of the Talus head completely destroyed leaving a large gap in my ankle where bone has now gone.
My consultant has told me that I wouldn’t climb again and doing a mountain would be ‘very uncomfortable’!
But anyone who knows me knows I won’t give up without a fight!! So I have been climbing since (with ropes for my safety). Also I have been on some smaller hikes- however pain has been challenging.
At the moment I am trying to manage my pain- with use of analgesic medications/use of crutches and occasionally a wheelchair. However- I won’t let bad days get my down and I will continue to move and manage my pain and ankle movements (which is pretty restricted due to the metalwork) to get my ass up Mt Snowdon.
Why do Snowdon?? I LOVE mountains and I want to continue doing what I love!! I love climbing and hiking and that is where my joy and happiness is. I am not ready to give this up- so I won’t!
On the Bank Holiday weekend in August I will be climbing Mt Snowdon with a team (unsure on how many people will be joining me) to reach the summit and get back down (no train for me)! Any support would be appreciated!
Why East of England Ambulance Service?
When I had my injury I was obviously in a lot of pain and extremely scared, the paramedics that came out to me were amazing! They were calming, supportive and extremely professional. They managed to realign my foot (as was in a proper gross position) and make me feel safe and comfortable (as much as possible anyway). We know they are very under appreciated and the service is under extreme pressures and stress with the NHS cuts and demands and I would love to give back to those who supported me so wonderfully.
