Story

Support me in running the Hackney Half Marathon, to raise money for Bail for Immigration Detainees (BID).

BID is an independent charity that exists to end immigration detention in the UK. They provide legal advice, information, and representation to those detained, while conducting research and policy work that challenges the practices of immigration detention.

In the UK, the Home Office has the power to lock people up in detention indefinitely, without trial. The conditions are overcrowded, with limited privacy and poor mental health being a serious concern for people detained.

Some detention centres are positioned close to airports, intended to make it easier to remove people from the UK. These people have fled violence and persecution, and the fear of deportation creates fear and confusion. The government is currently trying to expand the detention estate, through creating new laws like the Illegal Migration Act 2023 that gives the Home Office more power to detain.

Since 1999, BID have supported over 46,000 people to get out of detention and have borne witness to and evidenced many gross abuses of state power. For example, research from 2023 shows that of the 15,864 people detained in 2023, 61% were bailed, meaning that in the majority of cases, the Home Office is using its powers to detain unlawfully and excessively.

Legal advice and information is incredibly difficult to get hold of in detention centres. This is why BID’s work is vital - it is crucial that people have access to legal advice to help them challenge their own detention.

We dream of a world free of immigration detention, where people are not deprived of their liberty or deported from their home. Protect people, not borders!

Please help me to raise £250; enough to keep BID's advice phone running for a week.

Thank you!
