Story
The Sick Children’s Trust is the charity that provides a welcoming ‘Home from Home’ where families with a sick child in hospital can stay. But we’re more than bricks and mortar, our friendly, caring staff are there to support families when they really need it.
Without us families would have to travel long distances, sleep in uncomfortable hospital chairs or pay for expensive hotels just to be by their sick child’s hospital bedside. Not only do we alleviate financial worries but we also help the mental wellbeing of the families we support.
Our Story
At our 20 week scan with our twin boys, we were told our son George had a condition known as a CPAM (Congenital Pulmonary Airway Malformation).
George has been hospitalised 6 times with bronchiolitis in his life, each time needing oxygen. At 21 months old, George had a lobectomy at Addenbrookes Hospital. We had waited for this moment before our boy was even born, when the time came, we had no idea where we would stay or what to expect, George was all that mattered. We were taken in and supported by the incredible team at The Sick Children’s Trust who let us stay at Acorn House, a home from home in this traumatic time in our lives. We were so lucky that George bounced back from his surgery so quickly and could be moved from the high dependency unit and onto a ward, meaning that I could stay with him constantly and his Dad could return home to our other boys. The incredible staff at Acorn House could not have done more to support us, they gave us a place of refuge in our greatest time of need. We just can’t thank them enough for what they do.
