Story
Last year I joined the incredible team of volunteers, supported by a paramedic and security, for a Saturday night shift in the heart of Norwich on the big yellow SOS Bus.
I was blown away by their compassion and dedication to provide this service every weekend to people in need.
Before the team had a chance to set up, the police were bringing along someone in need of first aid. Throughout the night, I witnessed the team give their time to individuals experiencing severe emotional distress, friends bringing in friends concerned drinks had been spiked, people needing flip flops or a safe space to wait for a lift home, and the man who could easily have been sent home if it wasn't for the time the team took to understand, listen, to interact, to react and highly likely, to save his life.
The SOS Bus offers a safe, non-judgemental space, when people are feeling scared, isolated and vulnerable and ensuring numerous people reach home safely with friends and family.
As a mum to a teenage daughter, I am feeling sincerely thankful that this service exists in the heart of Norwich, playing a huge part in keeping people safe.
I am acutely aware of how vulnerable this service is, only part funded, reliant upon donations to cover the costs of running every Friday and Saturday night – just under £1500 per shift. Invaluable.
In a few weeks, I am literally stepping way out of my comfort zone and embracing my fear of heights with a parachute jump, to raise funds for the SOS Bus - every penny counts and every show of support will be gratefully received!!!
