Story
In April 2024, I'm challenging myself to run my first full marathon in London. I'm raising money for Sue Ryder, St John's Hospice in memory of my Dad, Mike, and close family friend Brian Young.
Nothing quite prepares you for supporting a loved one at the end of their life. That's why we thank our lucky stars for charities like Sue Ryder, St John's Hospice in Bedfordshire.
My wonderful Dad, Mike Kirby (husband to Jennie), passed away peacefully in October 2021. The Sue Ryder community team provided palliative care to Dad at home, which was where he wanted to finish this journey. Dad kept the nurses on their toes, and we still smile at the humour they shared with him. There was no limit to their care and compassion.
Brian (husband to Yvonne, Dad to Dan and my childhood neighbour) bravely fought lung cancer, before passing away peaceful and painless thanks to the incredible care from the team at Sue Ryder, St Johns Hospice Centre at Moggerhanger. Not only did they provide outstanding care for Brian but also for Yvonne and Dan.
Despite their illnesses, both Mike and Brian were able to live the best life they possibly could right up to the end - thanks to this wonderful charity. To show my gratitude, I'm running to raise £3,000 for Sue Ryder, St John's Hospice.
