Story
In May, we're running the Hackney Half to raise money for Shout, the charity we work for and the UK’s only free, confidential and 24/7 text support service. Every day, our trained volunteers take around 2,000 conversations with people struggling with their mental health. We regularly hear feedback from those who have used the service and from parents or other relatives who want to let us know that Shout saved their or their child’s life.
Being a text service, it’s more accessible in so many ways than other mental health services: talking on the phone is scary for some and impossible for others. Many aren’t ready to say their deepest, darkest thoughts out loud, let alone risk being overheard.
On the running side of things...
Grace:
surprise surprise, it helps my mental health a lot - a big training run really helps to clear my head for the next couple of days, even though at the moment I’m always physically so sick afterwards 😅 My aim for this half marathon is for it to not be pure torture at the end - I’m hoping to mostly enjoy it, so there’s lots more training coming up to get to that point.
Emma:
I agree! As someone who had never run before this, it's been a real journey of discovery. The distance is still very scary though and your support will certainly help during the inevitable low points of chugging round 21.5km of Hackney."
