Story
At the age of 23, I was recently diagnosed with a rare genetic eye disease, Vitelliform macular dystrophy aka BEST disease ( quite an ironic name if you ask me ) With it comes progressive central vision loss, Central vision is the most important part of a person's vision. It is used to read, drive, and see pictures or people’s faces. Macular disease can affect those of all ages. As you can imagine the uncertainty of a diagnosis like this can be scary and life changing. As BEST disease is a genetic disease someone effected by it has a 50% chance of passing it onto their children.
Currently there is no cure available for those with all types of macular disease. It is the biggest cause of sight loss within the UK. Around 300 people are diagnosed DAILY.
Much more research is needed for macular disease as there is very little known surrounding the multiple forms of diseases. Without this research there will be no hope in finding treatments or a possible cure.
Prior to my diagnosis I had never heard of macular disease let alone BEST disease and those who have heard of it assume that it only effects elderly people. not only will this fundraiser bring us one step closer to finding a cure but it also spreads awareness.
Myself, Kim, Paul and Adam will be walking the distance equivalence of London to Paris 292 miles (about 616,704 steps) in the month of may to support The Macular Society!
*EDIT*
As we will of reached our goal of 616,704 steps in less than 2 weeks we will continue and see just how many steps we can do by the end of may
Thank you for taking your time to read and supporting use especially during a cost of living crisis, it means the world to me!
