Story
For those of you who don’t know, OXSRAD is a life-enhancing health, fitness, and recreation centre in Oxford.
When I first joined OXSRAD, I didn’t know the immense challenges it faces.
Without OXSRAD, countless individuals would lose access to inclusive fitness, sports, and social activities—but most importantly, they’d lose a sense of community. OXSRAD is a rare and precious space where everyone is valued and belongs.
Many of the people we support are overlooked in everyday life: disabled individuals, SEN children, those with neurological conditions, people with learning difficulties, the elderly, and young people struggling with mental health.
OXSRAD is a place for EVERYONE and doesn’t shy away from the challenges many of these groups face. Instead, we embrace them, and go head-first into thinking up ways we can include them and support them improve their physical and mental well-being.
I have been sent countless messages explaining why OXSRAD is so important, here are some that stand out to me:
“It’s a truly welcoming place. It’s helped me feel that a disability isn’t something to be ashamed of.”
“OXSRAD opens your eyes to disability. It’s a huge inspiration to be around.”
“The inclusive community is the best bit. Gyms can be intimidating, especially for women, but OXSRAD is so different.”
I am aiming to cycle 60 miles, in honour of the 6 months I have spent working at OXSRAD. Please sponsor me if you can, I can’t tell you the impact donations makes. ❤️
