It's time to beat the highest peak in Northern Ireland! ⛰️
On 14th June 2025 Eloise and Bex will hike 18 miles through Northern Ireland's most dramatic mountain range in memory of their mums, in the hope that other families will be able to receive the same care and kindness that helped their families through that difficult journey with cancer.
Eloise:
During my mums stay in the Marie Curie hospice, the end of life care was nothing short of amazing. The nurses and doctors there had so much expertise but they were also compassionate, kind, and dedicated to making her as comfortable as possible. Most importantly, it gave us the space to just be with our mum, to hold her hand and talk to her without the pressure of managing her care.
We had brought my mum plants from her garden to look at while she was in bed, and after she passed, the nurse picked a rose from her make-shift garden and lay it on her pillow. Its moments like this that mean I will forever be grateful to Marie Curie for providing her with dignity in her final days, and for offering us the support we needed during the hardest time of our lives.
It’s so important to me that we raise some money for other families to be able to receive this help too.
Bex:
My mum would never let us mention the word "hospice", it was an absolute non-negotiable. However, after yet another appauling stay with the hospital and in absolute agony, another patient managed to convince her to try Marie Curie. Upon arriving, the head chef Michael came out and asked my mum what she wanted for lunch. He said he would make her anything she wanted even if it wasn't on the menu. When I came to visit, one of the nurses had just finished blow drying my mum's hair. Whenever my mum hit her buzzer, a nurse was there within minutes. My mum was anxious being without my dad, so the hospice provided a bed for dad to have date nights in with mum where they also cooked him food along with a little candle. These touches are something my family will never forget and my mum actually felt nervous when it came to coming home! When she went in on her second stay, we were joking with her it was just to have some of Michael's steak Diane!
Everyone should be entitled to this level of care at end of life, and that's why I am so passionate about raising funds for Marie Curie!
