The medium of radio is a powerful tool Tearfund and its partner use across the world in broadcasting our Transforming Communities training.

Hope FM, in Kajo Keji, South Sudan, is a radio programme that is seeing lives transformed, reaching those living in extreme poverty, like Julius, and equipping them with the knowledge to transform their lives.

After conflict broke out in Kajo Keji, Julius and his family had to flee to Uganda, where they became refugees.

Years later, upon returning home, Julius discovered their home was burnt down and all their belongings were looted. They had no water, limited food, and were sleeping in the burnt remains of their home.

‘I went to visit a friend who had a radio and listened to a program called Transforming Communities that was full of teaching.’

‘When I listened to the program and teaching of CCT, I got deeper teachings that inspired me, especially identifying the local resources to transform our situation.’

Julius identified the land as one of his resources that he could cultivate to grow food to eat and form an income through selling other crops he grows.

‘Without this training, we would still be stuck in our old lifestyle and farming methods where previously, we only grew food crops to eat. We had no idea how to transform the soil to produce more.’

‘I give thanks to Transforming Communities because it has transformed us and we have forgotten the past [difficulties], and now our feeding is better and there is enough food now.’
