Story
We are at the heart of the initiative that is working with the World Health Organisation and leading experts on the disease to tackle meningitis globally. Our intrepid volunteers are taking on this incredible challenge and raising money to help us defeat meningitis and septicaemia by 2030.
Meningitis is the swelling of the lining (the Meninges) around the brain and spinal cord; it can be caused via a bacterial or viral infection. Septicaemia (sepsis) is poisoning of the blood and can be a consequence of contracting meningitis. It is developed by the same bacterial/ viral infection that caused meningitis. Both meningitis and sepsis can be fatal so knowing the symptoms early are crucial.
Anyone, regardless of age, can be affected by meningitis. However, babies and young children are most at risk of contracting meningitis with students/ young adults closely followed. I myself have seen the effects of meningitis on mutual friends and family members.
Money raised will support researchers in new vaccine trials, provide doctors the correct equipment to diagnose and help families who have been effected by meningitis.
I will be attempting to summit mount Kilimanjaro in early September. Throughout the year, I will also be completing 2 running races, climbing the Yorkshire 3 peaks and other activities to help fundraise the money for this great cause.
