Story
I'm running the BMW Berlin Marathon 2025 for Dementia UK because, In April 2023 I completed my first world marathon major the London Marathon. Just one month after completing this event we received the unfortunate news that my amazing grandma was diagnosed with vascular dementia. Unfortunately since then my grandmas condition has declined and she has good days and bad days. Although there have been hard times there have also been some amazing moments that give us strength as a family to keep her going and keep the faith alive. My grandma attends a weekly Dementia support group which is funded by Dementia UK. In this group my grandma gets to be with people in similar situations to her which is refreshing it also allows my grandad some time to himself as becoming a full time carer at 84 was not something he had planned. In this group my grandma gets to sing songs, many from her childhood and if you get her talking about things from the past it is like her memory has never faded. Without vital funding from Dementia UK groups like the music therapy sessions would never happen and this is why I plan on running my third marathon major to keep the momentum and raise awareness for this amazing cause!
Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Our nurses, called Admiral Nurses, provide life-changing care to families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. They help people with dementia stay independent for longer, and support the people caring for them so they have the strength to cope with the bad days, and the energy to enjoy the good days. They have the time to listen and the knowledge to solve problems, helping families take back control when they are struggling.
