Story
Hi, my name is Ellen Barber
I have been selected as one of 12 jockeys to race in this year's Goodwood Magnolia Cup on Thursday 1st August 2024.
- Why have I entered this race?
I have entered this race for many reasons;
Firstly one of the biggest reasons is that I wanted to ride in Magnolia Cup as a tribute to my Grandfather Paul Barber who sadly passed last year. He held such a legacy in horse racing and I just know he would have absolutely loved seeing me on a racehorse.. racing!!
Secondly, I want to empower and encourage women to show them they can work/study alongside pursuing their dreams, knowing that anything is possible.
Lastly… I am super competitive and just love an adrenaline surge and thought this was just a fantastic opportunity I couldn’t refuse!!
- What does it mean to me?
It means so much being involved with such an incredible organisation and even more knowing our amazing charity we are doing this for. Having the opportunity to do this is once in a lifetime and I am so grateful to be apart of this!
- How have I found the training so far?
Training has been amazing so far and it’s fun to juggle around my actual athletics training! I am managing to ride out for Karl Burke on my ‘rest days’ which is just amazing. His horses are incredibly fast and it’s an incredible part of the country to ride out in. I’m loving every minute of it.
- Supporting My Sisters' House
I am so thrilled that we are riding for the charity My Sisters’ House. They work and care for women to help and support improve their welfare and wellbeing, reduce their risk of domestic abuse and support their recovery, and help women reach your goals for employment, education or training. Just amazing.
