We match people in prison with befrienders to reduce social isolation and reoffending

Story

We are swimming the iconic serpentine on 14th September to raise funds for New Bridge Foundation who have been working to reduce isolation and reoffending of prisoners for nearly 70 years.

We have known about the importance of their work for a long time as my Mum has worked for them for over 30 years. New Bridge recruits, trains and supports volunteers to befriend prisoners at a time when suicide in prison is rising with nearly 8 prisoners taking their own lives each month 30% of these had no family contact prior to their death and prison staff cannot fulfil this role. Contact with a New Bridge volunteer can give isolated prisoners a sense of mattering to someone, and improve their self-esteem and confidence while they serve their sentence.

Please, if you are able, make a donation to support New Bridge to continue doing their incredible work.

Liz and Charlie will keep swimming in outdoor pools, before taking on the challenge of Swim Serpentine!

About the charity

We match people in prisons with trained volunteers who offer long-term support through a combination of correspondence and visits. This provides people in prison with a bridge to the outside world, along with an increased sense of value and potential for their future.
