Story
Ealing Choral Society are holding a Carol Concert, on the 16th December 2023 7pm at St Barnabas Church W5, to support Read Easy Ealing who do important work in our community helping adults to learn to read.
Every year at Christmas time, Ealing Choral Society supports a local charity with the proceeds of our carol concert.
In December 2023, we have chosen to support Read Easy Ealing, a local charity which offers free one-to-one reading lessons for adults who have struggled to learn to read.
Their vision is for all adults to have the literacy skills they need to fulfil their potential and live life to the full.
It is estimated that 6 percent of Ealing borough’s population cannot read, a disadvantage that has wide-reaching implications: non-readers are five times more likely to be unemployed, and poor understanding of basic health information is linked to higher mortality rates.
Read Easy pairs up specially trained volunteer coaches with non-readers for two 30 minute sessions a week; the coach/ reader relationship is open ended.
Their work improves employment opportunities and the readers’ ability to support their own children and families better, as well as to enjoy the pleasure of a good book.
The money raised by our Carol Concert will be used on vital reading resources and coach training, enabling Read Easy Ealing to expand their work in the borough.
At present it costs around £250 to coach a reader through the programme using reading manuals and carefully selected support materials.
Every pound we raise brings someone closer to being able to read, and everything that can mean, be it reading alone or with family, reading a menu for oneself, voting, understanding offers in shops, reading official letters or even just the parking meter.
