Story
My name is Ebtisam Elghblawi, Libyan berber MD, and living in the Uk. I am fundraising for Libyan city-“Derna Emergency relief” and “Morocco earthquake”. In the last six days two major disasters have hit North Africa. An earthquake had hit central Morocco and almost 3000 people have been reported killed and over 5000 are missing. People are trapped under the collapsed buildings, their homes destroyed and unsafe to return to. Following that a devastating floods and a strong Daniel storm hit eastern Libya. It was described as a huge deadly tide of water like a tsunami has hit and left at least 10.000 people missing in Libya in only two days, as storm Daniel moved across the Mediterranean and bartered the North African coast in great despair. The bustling coastal city of Derna was unrecognisable after only two dams burst, causing a flood that destroyed four bridges. Abandoned houses and flattened apartment blocks, overturned vehicles and fallen trees littered its flooded streets. Local witness described apocalyptic scenes. Bodies were lying everywhere in the seas, valleys and under the buildings. It’s estimated nearly 2000 dead and the number of missing is 5000 so far with more than 20.000 gone homeless. The death toll is rising up dramatically. It’s a complete calamity. It’s stated that 25 percent of the city has disappeared. Many buildings have collapsed. Citycentre is littered with corpses. Local witness thought it’s a heavy rain when it started but by midnight a huge explosion was heard. Locals in both countries are begging the world for humanitarian aid. There is nothing to save people life. There are no trained rescuers. The last 12 years were just war between two divided governments militias in Libya. Emergency services in Libya are not equipped to deal with a catastrophe of this magnitude, the survivors of this catastrophic floods, are in dire and immediate need of support.
