Story
When we think of things that come in pairs it’s usually a good thing. A pair of great new shoes, sparkly earrings, chopsticks – most pairs make life prettier and easier to manage. Yet a re-diagnosis of breast cancer after ten years in remission is a devastating pair of cancer diagnoses that would cause most people to go into hiding and wonder why they were dealt such a frightening hand. Not so for our two-time breast cancer survivor, Donna Wolfson.
When Donna was only 41 years old, she scheduled a routine mammogram. The news was not what anyone would wish to hear. She learned that she had breast cancer and that the treatment required a lumpectomy followed by rounds of radiation plus a five-year course of the cancer drug Tamoxifen. This would not be an easy task, but along with great medical care and the support from her friends and family, Donna pushed through her treatments like a champion with grace and gratitude and moved on with her life. That is until her ten-year anniversary of being in remission.
Ten years almost to the day, Donna went back to her oncologist for a routine breast exam, expecting a clean bill of health and a reason to celebrate. In a split second, the unimaginable suddenly became her reality. The breast cancer had come back for a second time, and she was suddenly facing another round of breast cancer treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation, and recovery.
August 2024 marks Donna’s 5-year anniversary in remission from a second bout of breast cancer. This beautiful and avid exotic car enthusiast is thankful for every day of health and sums up her journey in the words of Enzo Ferrari:
