Fundraising for Barnardo's
Barnardo's helps hundreds of thousands of children, young people, parents and carers across the UK. They don't abandon children because of who they are or what they've done. They listen to them, fight for their rights and do whatever it takes to protect and support them because they believe that all children have the right to a happy and healthy life. At a time when more young people need specialist help with complex issues like sexual abuse, mental health problems and serious violence, their work is more vital than ever.
Barnardo's also carries a particular personal connection for me. I am the youngest of three brothers, the eldest of which has had complex learning and care needs from an early age. In the early 1980's, the research and awareness around Asperger's syndrome and the Autistic spectrum was not as expansive as it is today. As a result, when my mum was told that her first born son had these conditions it was incredibly daunting for her. Very luckily, she was put in contact with Barnardo's who helped guide her towards resources, advice and a support network that continued to this day.
My eldest brother lives a full and happy life with a high degree of independence. His journey to this was undoubtedly aided by the help and support of Barnardo's in those early years.
