Sleepout for Amber · 14 November 2024

Campaign by Amber (RCN 1051388)
Come join us for the Eden Sleep Out on Thursday 14th November 2024 and raise money to support young people facing homelessness, long term unemployment and mental-ill health.

Story

I like my bed.

This will be my second time sleeping out, last year, I woke up at 3am, I had wriggled my sleeping bag open and was absolutely freezing, just freezing cold. I didn't get back to sleep, but I eventually got warm, and watched the rain pour down several times as I stayed in my faux homelessness cocoon for the night.

I realised how lucky I was that night for all the comforts I had, and that every night for the rest of the year I would sleep soundly, safely and dryly. I mulled over quite genuinely, what I would've done the next day if I was tired, achey, cold and wet, and then the next day, and the next.

Please support those less fortunate than ourselves with a small token of goodwill...

Young people turn to Amber for a variety of complex reasons and they can come from all walks of life. However most are from disadvantaged backgrounds and many have been in care. The common triggers are family breakdown, leaving care, prison release or losing a private tenancy. However most are also dealing with trauma, mental ill-health and/or addiction.

Amber provides a temporary but safe home at their centres in Devon, Wiltshire, Surrey and Kent. During their stay each young person receives full support and follows Amber's unique development programme designed to support them to turn their life around and move on to a bright, independent future.
