Story
Be an Angel for Breast Cancer is a month-long effort, organized by the RMH Foundation, to raise awareness and money to support the fight against breast cancer. Individuals come together, spread the word to their family, friends and neighbors, and ultimately help save lives. 100% of donations raised stay here in this community to help more women receive the care they need.
Do you know someone who has had breast cancer? Most likely you do. I’m one of those 1 in 8 women diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Early detection was key in my case. My annual mammogram in December 2019 indicated something that needed further exploration. A biopsy confirmed I had breast cancer. However, I was very fortunate – it was ductal carcinoma in situ or non-invasive carcinoma, stage 0. I’m almost 4 years cancer free following surgery and radiation. I continue to have my annual mammograms and annual MRIs. Also as part of my cancer journey I learned that I have a CHEK2 gene mutation that makes me more likely to get breast cancer as well as other medical issues. So my breast cancer diagnosis led me to other specific health issues that should be and are being monitored.
I encourage all women to have an annual mammogram beginning at age 40 or earlier if they detect a lump. One of my friends, Corrie Lynn Green, was diagnosed at age 40 with aggressive breast cancer only because she and a group of friends decided to visit the Sentara RMH mobile van when it was at one of the local wineries. I’m pleased to say after her treatments she too is cancer free.
Like me I’m sure you too have family, friends, and co-workers, both female and possibly male, who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately there are individuals in our community who don’t have insurance and should have a mammogram but don’t because they can’t afford it. Please help me to make it possible for those in need to receive the mammograms that save lives. You can make a difference. Thank you for your support!
